Sea Breeze Artist Residency

for writers and visual artists

Mission

Founded in the spring of 2023, the Sea Breeze Artist Residency was created to offer artists and writers an inspiring place to focus on their work. The residency honors Mary Newhouse, a passionate advocate for the arts and a devoted steward of Block Island’s natural beauty. Mary believed that individual creative endeavors have the power to make the world a better place, and her spirit continues to guide our mission.

The Residency on Block Island

The ten-day residency takes place at the Sea Breeze Inn on Block Island, just off the coast of Rhode Island. With strong traditions of nurturing the arts and environmental conservation, Block Island provides a uniquely tranquil setting well suited to creative practice. We host two sessions each year during the quieter months of May and October, when reduced tourism creates a noticeable shift in energy.

Each resident has a private guest room at the Inn. Visual artists are provided with a studio space, while writers choose to work either at Sea Breeze or at the Island Free Library, one of the island’s year-round community hubs. A delicious and healthy breakfast and lunch are provided daily. The residency is intended to provide uninterrupted studio and writing time, with little distractions. Bicycles are available for residents to explore the island at their own pace. The location is ideal for exploring, and for walking into the main town of Old Harbor.

The Sea Breeze Artist and Writer Residency is committed to using a diverse, rotating jury composed of past residents and members of the island community, and also includes professional artists, writers, editors, and educators. Applications undergo a careful and thorough review process, evaluated according to multiple criteria to ensure a fair selection.

An important part of this residency is connection with the Block Island community.

Our residents are invited to share their work and creative process through an open studio, public talk, workshop, class at the local BI School, or other community-centered event. The residency is also committed to supporting the local economy by partnering with island vendors and other small businesses. As a small, seasonal business on the island, we understand how the off-season can be both rewarding and isolating. Our public programs help generate activity during these quieter months, supporting the shift in tourism during the shoulder seasons. Our mission is to foster meaningful connections between artists, writers, and the Block Island community.

We sincerely thank the following for their invaluable support and assistance: Block Island Arts Council, Roosa Foundation, Island Free Library, BI Times, Rhode Island Foundation, Block Island Tourism Council, Arts and Crafts Guild of Block Island, and the private donors who have generously contributed.

IN-KIND SUPPORT

The Sea Breeze Inn serves as the foundational partner of the residency program, contributing a comprehensive range of in-kind support that makes this program possible. This support spans every aspect of the ten day residency experience, from arrival through the final reception. At the heart of our program is on-site housing and the majority of meals for all participating artists and writers over the course of the residency. Residents receive daily breakfast and lunch, ensuring they can focus their time and energy on their creative work without distraction. The Sea Breeze staff is available to make sure each resident has what they need for a comfortable and productive stay. The Inn also arranges and hosts both the welcome dinner at the start of the residency and the culminating reception that marks its close — two cornerstone events that connect residents with the broader island community.

Recognizing that a connection to place enriches creative work, the Sea Breeze Inn curates a series of unique island experiences designed to introduce residents to the special character and community of Block Island. These activities — which have included apiary tours, oyster farm tours, bird banding, and historical taxi tours.  The Sea Breeze residency allows a truly immersive, well-supported experience for visiting artists and writers, while deepening the ties within the creative island community.
